Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Coupons Still Available

Baton Rouge: While more than 13,500 Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupon booklets have already been mailed to senior citizens this year, there are still funds available for the program, Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain D.V.M., said.

“We want all seniors that think they may qualify for the program to sign-up with their local Council on Aging office,” Strain said. “This is an opportunity for senior citizens to receive a little help with their grocery bill.”

To participate, a person must be at least 60-years-old and earn less than 185 percent of poverty level. Strain said for a one-person household, the annual household income level should be $20,036 or less, the annual household income level in a two person household should be $26,955 or less.

Seniors who qualify will receive a booklet of five $4-coupons totaling $20, which may be used only to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, cut herbs and honey approved by the FMNP from approved farmers at farmers markets and roadside stands.

The coupons must be redeemed by Nov. 30, 2009.

Seniors who receive commodities through the USDA – Food for Seniors Program; those who have a Letter of Eligibility for the Louisiana Purchase Card (food stamps); those who have a Letter of Eligibility for Supplemental Security Income (SSI); or those who receive Medicaid are pre-qualified for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

Strain said all seniors, even those who pre-qualify, must sign-up with a local Council on Aging office to apply for the program.

For more information about the Farmers Market Nutrition Program, call (985) 345-9483.

This is posted from an email I received.  As far as I know, these coupons can NOT be used for the Angel Food fruit and vegetable special, only for purchases with approved farmers, farmers, markets, and approved roadside vendors.  Please call them directly or visit their website if you have questions.

MEDIA ALERT

Men Needed for the Awareness and Prevention of Domestic Violence Rally at State Capitol on June 5th

For immediate release For more information contact Alexis Anderson @ (225) 791-3940 or email womenowomen@i-55.com

Did you know that every 9 seconds a woman is battered or 1 out of 4 adult women experience physical violence from an intimate partner and every 24 hours 7 battered women die from abuse? Did you know that behind all those statistics are children, family members and community members that want to see an end to domestic violence? On June 5th men of all backgrounds are being encouraged to stand up for the women in their lives and become a voice for change. The purpose of this rally is to recognize and acknowledge that most men are concerned about the issue of domestic violence and want to be part of the solution. Men interested in signing up to participate in the rally can contact WOW at (225) 791-3940 or email womenowomen@i-55.com or fax this form to (225) 791-3942.

Women Outreaching Women has partnered with local radio personality Scott Innes and local author and businessman Romel Russell to bring awareness to the role men play in preventing domestic violence and to help get signatures for a petition drive and to enlist men to participate in the Men Needed: Stand Up Against Domestic Violence Rally

The above Press Release was emailed to me and is something I wish I could attend.  I have a previous engagement Friday that prevents me from attending.  I urge any of you men out there that can make it, please attend.  If you can’t attend, then please remember the rally and the many women suffering this turmoil in your prayers.

Pre-Apply for Disaster Food Stamps this Storm Season June 1, 2009

My friends over at Graceworks, another Angel Food host site in Ascension Parish ran across this information, and I thought it worthy of passing on.

Beginning June 1 the state will allow people to pre-apply for disaster food stamps in the event there is storm this season. The website to apply is https://dsnap.dss.state.la.us/CitizenPortal/.  If you pre-apply, it should help to speed up the process for you in the event of a major storm this year if the disaster food stamp program is activated, again.

The following items are needed to complete your pre-application

  • Name, social security number, and birth date for each household member
  • Parish where you currently live
  • Residential address
  • Monthly income for each household member
  • Liquid resources for each household member such as:
  • Cash on Hand
  • Checking Accounts
  • Savings Accounts
  • Certificates of Deposit (CDs)
  • Money Market Accounts

Typo on Events Flier – June 2009 May 31, 2009

Well, I found an error on my June 2009 Events Flier that was passed out with the Angel Food boxes yesterday…

The next to the last event announcement for no PM services was dated incorrectly.  The dates should have been Sunday, June 14th – Sunday, June 28th. For some reason, I got ahead of myself and typed July 28th (which is not a Sunday, anyway), sorry for the mistake.  I guess I’m going to have to fire my proof-reader…wait, that’s me…nevermind!  The correct information is listed on the Events page of this blog site.
