Who qualifies for this “ministry”?
Everyone! That’s the greatest part of this ministry, anyone who eats can benefit from it. Finally, a program that is open to everyone, regardless of income level, you are purchasing the food the same as if you went to the grocery store.
What’s the catch?
Well, that’s the amazing part, there isn’t one! Unless you count the menu being pre-set by AFM, and not being able to pick and choose what’s in your box. But there have been very few items in the box that my family doesn’t eat. On the rare occasion we’ve had that happen, we just give it to someone who can use it.
How did this start?
AFM started this from Joseph & Linda Wingo’s back porch in Monroe, Georgia in 1994. I’ve had a good bit of contact with AFM headquarters since Live Oak Baptist became a host site in April of 2007. I can tell you from personal experience that the people in their office care about everyone involved in this program, from individuals trying to save money, to those who are hurting, to the host sites, themselves.
Is there a host site closer to me?
Click on the link “Angel Food Host Site Search” in the “Important Links” section to the right and look for a host site near you. It’s easy to use, just put your zip code in and press “Search”. There should be contact information there for each host site. If not, you can call Angel Food Ministries Headquarters (1-800-FOOD-MINISTRY) to get more contact information. Host sites can include churches of all denominations to civic organizations. Some take orders online, like we do, others only take orders in person. Be aware that all host sites set their own days and times for ordering, as well as types of payment accepted. Where can I get the menu for this month?
Click on the tab “Current Menu” at the top of the pages. The menu is available there to view or download and print out. Each month, I’ll update the menu as well as the ordering days, deadline, and distribution day. Each month, the newest menu is usually released by AFM around the 15th, and I’ll get it published here as soon as I check our church calender and set the ordering days. If you would like to receive an email with the newest menu every month for yourself or your organization, please send me a message and I’ll be sure to add you to the mailing list. The monthly menu can also be faxed, just give me a call and I’ll be more than happy to fax you one.
Is the menu available in Spanish?
Unfortunately, my Spanish is a little rusty, so all of the pages on this site will be in English, only. However, AFM releases a menu on their website every month in Spanish. You can find the most recent one here: http://www.angelfoodministries.com
When do I place an order?
We take orders in person at Live Oak Baptist Church during set days and times, please see the Menu tab for this month’s ordering days and times. We also offer online ordering 24/7 using a credit or debit card. A link to order online is provided in the Important Links to the right of every page. Sorry, but we do not process orders over the phone. The deadline for online ordering is also listed on the Menu tab.
How and when do I pay for my order?
You pay for your order when you place it. We accept cash, money orders, credit/debit cards and food stamp (SNAP) cards. If you plan to order with cash, money order, or the SNAP Food Stamp Card, you’ll need to come in to place your order in person. Sorry, but we do not take personal checks.
When and how do I pick up my food?
Usually the last Saturday of the month is Distribution Day, when you pick up the food at our host site, Live Oak Baptist Church. When you arrive, you bring a box or cooler with you and our amazing volunteers will fill it assembly-line style. You can usually get in and out in 10 minutes or less. Also, you will be able to place an order for the next month and save yourself a trip if you would like. Distribution day is always published on our Current Menu tab as well as on our monthly fliers.
Is the food really any good?
The food is most definitely quality food. Some of the specials include some amazing packs of steaks, roasts, ribs, etc. The fresh fruit and veggie box is a huge favorite, it is usually our best selling special each month. Of course, the downside is that you must accept the set menu. But even if you don’t eat everything in the box and give some of it away, you’ll still save good money. Some of the brand names may be a bit unusual, but that’s most due to some of the food suppliers being in Canada, or producing regionally. My family, personally, has been buying Angel Food every month since December of 2007. It’s our primary source of groceries, we fill in other things as needed from the local grocery store. We’ve been extremely pleased with the quality of the food.
Will I really save money by buying Angel Food?
We’ve spot checked the menus from time to time against like items in Wal-Mart. The savings ranged from 50% to 70%. I find, on average, my family spends about 70% less than we did before participating in the Angel Food program. One of the most common comments we get on Distribution Day is “Wow, that was fast!” The wait time is typically less than 10 minutes, try getting that at Wal-Mart! And we’ll even carry it out to your car for you! You can’t get that just anywhere, these days.
How is Angel Food Ministries able to do this?
The primary way AFM is able to pass on savings to us all is volume. The main warehouse in Monroe, Georgia is HUGE! AFM has purchased fresh fruits and vegetables, for example, before they are even grown to lock in great prices. AFM distributes nearly 600,000 boxes of food every single month, and is growing.
AFM is a faith-based ministry. That means there is love and compassion involved. When you but God in the equation, wonderful things are possible!
The entire process is largely handled by volunteers. That means no store front and no overhead. That’s a huge savings in itself.
Can I buy food for others?
Of course! If you know anyone who could use some food – illness, new baby, job loss, whatever – this is a great way to help them out. If you went to the store, you’d waste an hour and spend twice as much. A good bit of what we distribute goes to people who are giving it to someone else.
What if I forget to pick up my food?
We will try call you if your order hasn’t been picked up by the time we are finishing up. If we are unable to reach you or you are unable to come pick up your order, we will have to donate the food to a needy family in our area. We will try to work with you as best we can for you to pick up your food if you forget, but please understand, many of our volunteers started their day at 3am on distribution day and are ready to go home as soon as they can after distribution. We cannot process refunds for unclaimed food or store it for later pickup, due to space limitations. Be sure to check your receipt for pickup day and time window. It’s a good idea to mark your calender or set an alarm on your cell phone to remind yourself.
